Morocco surf spots from Agadir to Imsouane: which break, which level, which month

For surfing in Morocco, the 80 km of coast between Agadir and Imsouane holds more than a dozen named surf spots, from sand-bottom beach breaks to the longest right-hand point breaks in Africa. This guide, written from the two SurfsHUB hostels in Taghazout and Tamraght, lists them south to north, says who each one is for, and gives the month-by-month picture so you can pick a week that matches your level.

Three things that decide where we surf each morning

Tide
The points work on the push from low to mid tide; the beach breaks are best around mid tide. The coach reads the tide table over breakfast and picks the spot before you have finished your coffee.
Swell size
Below 1 m, everyone surfs in front of the village. Between 1 and 2 m, beginners go to Tamraght and intermediates to the points. Above 2 m, the points are for advanced surfers and beginners still get their session at Devil's Rock, which shrinks the swell.
Wind
Mornings are glassy or lightly offshore almost every day of the year. From about 13:00 in summer a sea breeze arrives; that is why the second session is often a swim.

Questions people ask us

Which Morocco surf spot is best for a complete beginner?

Devil's Rock in Tamraght, followed by Banana Point once you can stand. Both have sand or a soft bottom, a defined channel, and lessons happening on them every morning of the year.

When is the best month to surf near Agadir?

October and November for most people: consistent swell, warm water, offshore mornings and no crowds. December to February if you want the points at full size and do not mind a 3/2 wetsuit.

Is Anchor Point suitable for intermediates?

On days under about 1.5 m, yes, with a coach. It is a long rocky point with a strong current back to the take-off, and the crowd is competent. Above that size it belongs to advanced surfers.
